Become a University Partner

If you are a college or university interested in becoming a University Partner and nominating your third-year undergraduates for Steamboat’s Summer Scholar Program, please note that we are currently exploring new partnerships for Summer 2010. We invite you to review Steamboat’s Criteria for University Partner Selection below and email Program Director, Emily Ryan, with interest.

Criteria for University Partner Selection

Steamboat is always eager to talk to prospective University Partners who may wish to join the Steamboat community by nominating their students to become Steamboat Scholars.

Steamboat seeks Scholars who meet the following criteria:

  • In their junior year of undergraduate study with an outstanding academic record
  • Demonstrate passion for their field of interest
  • Considered a thoughtful and engaged leader among their peers
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have a strong desire to live, a develop as a leader, with other Steamboat Scholars

In order to find outstanding Scholars, Steamboat works either with a University Partner that is the choice of an existing Grant Partner or identifies a University Partner that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in the field within which the associated Grant Partner operates.

If a college or university approaches Steamboat with interest but there is no Grant Partner in place, Steamboat may ask the interested University Partner to identify an appropriate Grant Partner.

University Partner posts and promotes the Steamboat opportunity to interested and qualified students. This is normally done through the Dean’s Office, Office of Distinguished Scholarships, career services, and/or the academic department(s) most closely related to the associated internship.

University Partner forms a University Review Committee, which includes distinguished members of the faculty, administration, career services and/or honors/fellowship program representatives.

University Partner helps organize an Information Session for prospective students in the fall where alumni Steamboat Scholars and Steamboat executives give a presentation and answer questions.

The Review Committee conducts initial evaluations of all received applications and provides Steamboat with the following documentation:

  • Copies of all student applications
  • Overview statistics of entire applicant pool (e.g., # of applicants who were notified and who applied)
  • Committee’s endorsements for Semi-Finalists, including evaluations and commentary (typically 5 to 10 students)

University Partner provides on-campus space and scheduling support for Steamboat to interview Semi-Finalist applicants.

University Partner provides final evaluation of Steamboat Foundation program process, including: coordination, responsiveness, interest in future placements, timing, challenges, and areas that could be improved for the following year.
