Alex Kowalski ’09 with Senior Mentor Tom Keene at Bloomberg.
Steamboat internships stand out in terms of their selectiveness, rigor, and uniquely supportive framework. Unlike many traditional internships, Steamboat Scholars are given substantive work assignments, including the chance to participate in an individual research project, as well as access to a Senior Mentor who is a leader within the organization. In selecting Grant Partners, Steamboat ensures that they are prominent organizations in their fields and that they will commit to providing an unparalleled experience for Steamboat Scholars. Year after year, Grant Partners report that they are thrilled with the quality of the Scholars.

Most of the internships that Scholars participate in are either unique within the Grant Partner organization or did not exist before Steamboat created the relationship. For example, the Steamboat Scholar at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is the only undergraduate intern in the curatorial department. Dr. David Altchek, a renowned orthopedic surgeon and the Senior Mentor at the Hospital for Special Surgery, rarely takes medical students - let alone undergraduate interns - yet each year a Steamboat Scholar shadows him for ten weeks.
