WABC/WPLJ Radio & Syracuse University

Each year since 2006, one Steamboat Scholar is selected from the junior class at Syracuse University to intern at WABC and WPLJ Radio. Previous WABC/WPLJ Scholars were selected from the University of Pennsylvania.

77 WABC is the number one news-talk station in America. The nationally syndicated programs Imus in the Morning, The Sean Hannity Show, The Mark Levin Show, The John Batchelor Show and Doug McIntyre's Red Eye Radio all originate on the station. "New York Weekend" features live and local programming from talk radio legend Bob Grant, Shmuley Boteach, Larry Kudlow and Aaron Klein. Sister-station 95.5 WPLJ is a heritage FM, broadcasting in the market for almost 40 years. Playing "Today's Best Music," its signature morning show is The Scott & Todd Big Show, hosted by Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill. The stations can also boast having two Radio Hall of Famers - Scott Shannon and Don Imus.

The Scholar has the opportunity to create a relationship with Senior Mentors, Steve Borneman, President and General Manager of WABC and WPLJ and Linda Wnek, Diversity Recruitment Coordinator. This internship gives the Steamboat Scholar the opportunity to explore three major aspects of radio—Programming, Promotions and Sales—and then concentrate on the area of greatest interest to him or her, all in a real-time, fast-paced radio environment.
