In 2010, the first Steamboat Scholar from Iowa State University will be selected from the junior class to work at Vineyard Vines in all aspects of design and merchandising. Previous Scholars were selected from Parsons The New School for Design.
Founded in 1998 by brothers Shep and Ian Murray, Vineyard Vines, the Stamford, Connecticut-based apparel brand best known for its whimsical and elegant silk ties, is a business success story. Now a maker of collection-based, preppy-inspired accessories and sportswear for men, women, and children, the company builds on its success by expanding its clothing lines and staying true to its simple philosophy of simply making quality products that customers will want to wear and providing the best customer service possible.
The Steamboat Scholar works in the field that best relates to his or her interest in all product classifications, including wovens, knits, and sweaters for the men, women, and children’s collections.
The Scholar's Senior Mentors are Vineyard Vines's Vice Presidents of Design, Nisa Mellin and Sarah Hand. To provide real industry experience, Nisa and Sarah take the Scholar through the different stages of creating a collection from color and concept to sketching and selecting fabrics. The Scholar has the opportunity to complete an independent project that incorporates his or her own sensibilities with Vineyard Vines's brand. Previous Scholars have had the chance to see their ideas go into production, a rare opportunity for an undergraduate intern.
