Each year, one Steamboat Scholar is selected from the junior class at University of Virginia's School of Architecture to work at Reed Hilderbrand Associates.
As a practice that focuses on landscape architecture projects for cities, institutions, development interests, and private individuals, Reed Hilderbrand has been recognized with over forty national and regional awards and honors. Led by Principals Douglas Reed and Gary Hilderbrand, the firm has produced a legacy of thoughtfully conceived, durably built, and sustainable works across the United States that demonstrate the capacity of the landscape as one of our most potent instruments of contemporary cultural expression. With 23 landscape architecture professionals who also possess backgrounds in planning, architecture, the arts, sciences and humanities, and graphic design, the firm promotes an open studio culture that fosters a creative design life and a mutually supportive atmosphere.
What makes the Steamboat opportunity unique is its access to graduate-level projects for an undergraduate, with the mentorship of Gary Hilderbrand, who will personally direct the Steamboat Scholar in a special research project. In addition to his role in directing projects for the firm, Gary is a widely recognized author and critic in the field. He has taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design since 1990 and is currently Adjunct Professor of Landscape Architecture there; he teaches lecture courses and workshops in the design use of vegetation, and has taught design studio at all levels of core learning and advanced design research. He currently directs a multi-year project at Harvard that investigates the application of sustainable practices to existing and evolving urban vegetation systems. This work is the subject of a publication, funded in part by a grant from the Fidelity Foundation.
The Steamboat Scholar will have ongoing assignments in support of project teams in the office. The Scholar is also asked to mount his or her own project of specific research or practice value, which is presented to the office as the internship draws to a conclusion.
