Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum & Williams College

Each year, one Steamboat Scholar is selected from the junior class at Williams College to work as an undergraduate curatorial intern at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, recognized as one of the world’s great small museums.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is at once an intimate collection of art and a vibrant, innovative venue for contemporary artists and scholars. Housed in an atmospheric Venetian-style palace, with three stories of galleries surrounding a garden courtyard, the Gardner Museum is a delightful and unique setting for art. The Museum’s collection consists of more than 8,000 works - including paintings, sculpture, furniture, books, and drawings - and houses an extensive archive on Isabella Gardner. Among the collection’s highlights are works by Titian, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Whistler, and Sargent, along with significant examples of Asian, Islamic, and Roman art.

The Steamboat Scholar works alongside the curators at the Gardner Museum, participating in the planning and execution of small, focused exhibitions. The Steamboat Scholar is mentored by Alan Chong, Curator of the Collection or Pieranna Cavalchini, Curator of Contemporary Art. These Senior Mentors introduce the Scholar to a wide range of the museum’s activities, including research for exhibitions, preparation of education materials for the web, work with visiting contemporary artists, and preparation for symposia.
