Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Nadia was Salutatorian of her high school class with several academic honors, including one for community service. She worked as the student chair for Nora's Life Gift Foundation, a non-profit hospitality house started by her parents. At Harvard, she served as President of the Society of Arab Students, a co-director of the Harvard First-Year Urban Program, a staff writer for the Harvard Crimson, and a member of the Junior Varsity Soccer team. Nadia pursued a joint degree in Postcolonial History and Literature combined with Women, Gender, and Sexuality and has considered combining her interests in social justice issues and medicine to work towards a career in public health.
Nadia worked in the Evaluation Department at Facing History and Ourselves on statistical analyses of data from several studies of the Facing History curriculum and seminars from schools in Memphis. By the end of the summer, she was also able to write her own summary of the analyses, including some qualitative responses from eighth graders in Memphis. Nadia also worked with the Research and Development department, helping them edit and draft the final report for a project on Muslim immigrants in Europe and the controversy over the Islamic veil in France.
Nadia recently returned to the U.S. after a year in England spent playing soccer, thinking about life, and pursuing a Master's in Medical Anthropology. She is moving to San Francisco in Fall 2011 to start an MD-PhD program in Anthropology, History, and Social Medicine at UCSF/UC Berkeley. She is nervously excited about committing to a life of near permanent student-hood, but she hopes being back in the States will reconnect her with her Steamboat Family at long last!
