Michael is a senior at Harvard College, where he concentrates in Social Studies with a focus field in Race and Law In America. Social justice and non-profit work has taken up a significant portion of Michael's undergraduate career. Michael directed LEADERS, a mentoring program for Cambridge and Boston area teens, was a Junior Counselor Coordinator for summer camps throughout the Cambridge and Boston area two summers ago and coaches Cambridge middle schoolers in recreational basketball for the HOOPS program. Michael interns at Harvard Law School's Office of Career Services during the school year, further exploring his interest in law. He also works with his peers as a Drug and Alcohol Peer Adviser, working to ensure that the Harvard campus is healthy and fun for all students. For fun, Michael plays on as many intramural sports teams as he can, including flag football, basketball, volleyball and softball. Michael is a member of the Harvard Black Men's Forum, Harvard Black Students' Association and the Phoenix SK Club. Michael is currently applying to various fellowships and scholarships to extend his studies and help him choose the best graduate program for him.
At Facing History and Ourselves, Michael worked on a final evaluation for a multi-year educational exchange program between Hudson (MA) High School students, Tech Boston Academy Students and high school students from Kigali, Rwanda and Nyanza, Rwanda. He also worked on an annual evaluation of the Facing History School, which is FHAO's biggest lab school and attended various meetings, conferences, interviews and projects with esteemed faculty from various universities (Harvard GSE, NYU, Eastern Michigan) that allowed him to learn about the inner workings of research and academia like never before.
Michael has accepted a teaching position with Teach for America and is now located in New York, New York. Specifically, Michael is teaching kindergarten at Excellence Boys Charter School of Bedford-Stuyvesant. He is simultaneously earning his M.A. in Education from the Relay School of Education. Michael is continuing to follow his love for education and using the skills he obtained as the 2010 Facing History and Ourselves Scholar to ensure that all children receive the excellent education they deserve.
