Jamie, an English major at John Jay College, has her sights firmly set on becoming an attorney. As an international student, she has an understanding of the challenges and rewards inherent to leadership and risk-taking. At the College, she has had the opportunity to serve as a Peer Ambassador, as well as an Orientation Leader. Through her internship at Safe Horizon, Jamie has become more aware of the issues that poor and minority people in our criminal justice system face and longs to work as an agent of change to help break the cycle of poverty that keeps different populations invisible and underrepresented in society. Jamie's research has been published two consecutive times in the College journal, John Jay's Finest, and in the future, she hopes to use her research and analytical skills to advance communities both locally and internationally.
During her internship at Newark Community Solutions (NCS), Jamie had the opportunity to work closely with the two social workers, Stella Sigalus and Sienna Hunter-Cuyjet, as they provided direct services to clients, as well as Senior Mentor, Jethro Antoine, Director of Newark Community Court. She was also able to observe informative group sessions conducted for clients, on substance abuse treatment and prevention, women’s empowerment and health, and mental health. The highlight of her summer experience was having the opportunity to develop a close relationship with the Honorable Judge Victoria Pratt, from whom she was able to receive tremendous career guidance and support.
Jamie is currently finishing her senior year at John Jay College.
