"I thank everyone who made this summer possible. Thank you to the visionary founders who had a vision and made it a reality to invest in education. Thank you to the staff who made the day-to-day possible. Thank you to Dr. Inck for constantly getting us to step out of our comfort zones. Thank you to USHG for giving me an unmatched internship experience and exposure. And, finally, thank you to the other Scholars whom I've had the pleasure of getting to know, and today call my friends."

Scholar Background

Motivated by the hard work and love his parents showed him at a young age, Carlos has devoted himself since high school to being a well-rounded individual with a special interest in people and the service/hospitality industry. Since his freshmen year at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, Carlos was involved in a variety of student organizations geared towards his passion for hospitality and the advancement of minorities within this field. He served as the Northeast Regional Chair for the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, where he worked with other students to find opportunities for minority students to interact with business professionals. He also served the community through his role as the president of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity. Carlos has also been awarded various forms of recognition for his constant commitment to service and hard work.

Internship Description

The highlight of Carlos’ summer was being able to see the progression and development of the Shake Shack brand. Luckily, there were a variety of different stages of development, so he had the opportunity to see what it takes to start a new business and turn it into the final product. In addition to actually spending time working in the Madison Square Park Shake Shack location, Carlos was assigned a total of twelve independent projects for the summer. These projects included: Restaurant and kitchen design, website design and auditing, new marketing campaigns, the creation of training manuals and templates, creating an emergency manual, and performing real marketing and SWOT analysis for future USHG restaurant locations.

Where are they now?

Immediately after graduation, Carlos was hired by Steamboat Foundation's Grant Partner Union Square Hospitality Group to be a manager at one of the new Shake Shack locations in New York City.
