Selection Process: Rounds

Round 1: Application and University Review: October-February

  • University Partners invite students to learn about Steamboat and submit an application, which includes a series of essays, letters of recommendation, CV, and other relevant information. To download the applications, click here.
  • Each University Partner has an internal review committee, comprised of faculty and administrators who review the first round of applications.
  • Each University Review Committee forwards the applications to Steamboat, with recommendations on which students should advance to the Semi-Finalist round.

Round 2: Semi-Finalists: January-April

  • Semi-Finalists are chosen to participate in on-campus interviews with Steamboat Foundation executives.
  • After the interviews are complete, Steamboat typically selects 2-4 Finalists.

Round 3: Finalists: January-April

  • Grant Partners interview Finalists on-site in their offices in New York or Boston.

Scholar Selection & Notification: January-May

  • Once the Finalists have been interviewed, the Grant Partner, in conjunction with Steamboat Foundation, selects the Steamboat Scholar.
  • Scholars are notified by Steamboat Foundation.

Steamboat Summer Scholar Program Finalists have been so exceptional that, in 40% of the instances, Grant Partners have separately hired students from the finalist pool in addition to choosing a Steamboat Scholar. For more facts about Steamboat, click here.
