Posted August 30, 2008
The summer began on June 2, 2008 with a two-day Orientation at the New School in New York, including the Fifth Annual Forbes Reception. This reception at the Forbes Galleries is generously hosted each year by Kip Forbes and is attended by Steamboat’s partners, friends, and alumni who gathered to welcome the new class of Scholars.
In 2008, Steamboat provided a group of eleven Scholars from each of our University Partners with challenging internships at each of our Grant Partners. For the first time in 2008, every Scholar and their Senior Mentor/s were visited by Steamboat executives for a dedicated Site Visit during the summer.
In addition to their $12,000 leadership award and internship experiences, Scholars attended five Leadership Dinners in New York, facilitated by leadership coach and psychologist Dr. Tom Inck, as well as three Foundation Dinners, where Scholars interacted with leaders in the fields of hospitality, science, and art. In 2008, the Foundation Dinner speakers included Danny Meyer, distinguished New York City restaurateur and author of the New York Times-bestseller Setting the Table; Dr. James Watson, Nobel Laureate for the discovery of the double helical structure of DNA; and Alan Chong, Curator of the Collection at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. In addition, 2008 Scholars had the opportunity to see a Mets game and the Tony award-wining musical Avenue Q, as well as participate in the first-ever, alumni-led Professional Development Workshop.
On August 15, 2008, Steamboat Foundation celebrated its Fifth Annual Final Dinner at New York City’s Harvard Club, where the 2008 class of Scholars commemorated the end of the ten-week fellowship.
