Posted July 13, 2009
All of the 2009 Scholars went to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) for a day of learning and new experiences. The day began with a presentation by 2009 CSHL Scholar Phil Coffman about the work he is doing in Dr. Partha Mitra's lab exploring new pathways in the brain.
Following the presentation, Dr. James Watson spoke to the Scholars about his most recent book, Avoid Boring (Other) People. Amongst other things, Dr. Watson told the Scholars how important it is for them to have young heroes, so they always have someone to look up to and something to strive for. He also emphasized the power of knowledge, pushing the Scholars to read more and learn more.
After lunch hosted by CSHL staff, faculty, and graduate students, the Scholars played the URPs (Undergraduate Research Program participants) in a lively beach volleyball game before heading back to the city.
